The Emotional Final Ride: Down in Flames Review
The Bunkhouse #4
Looking for a spoiler-free review of Down in Flames by Lainey Lawson? Here are my thoughts on the emotional final installment in The Bunkhouse series.
Lainey Lawson excels at cowboy romance, making me cry with this fourth and final bunkhouse story. I'm blessed and grateful to have read each of the bunkhouse boys’ stories in advance, and this one only deepened my love for the series.

Getting to know the silent, brooding last man at the bunkhouse, who might have the biggest heart of all, made me melt each time I learned more about Heston. He is reserved, quiet, methodical, sexy, fiercely loyal, and devoted to the woman he loves, even when she’s unaware of that love.
Heston’s personality shapes Down in Flames, making the reading experience reflect who he is. Hattie Jo is a shining light to his dark exterior. Once they reunite and face their past, their perfection together is undeniable.
With ranch duties, emergency vet calls, rodeo lessons, a psycho ex, the weight of the past, and finally accepting their deep love, there is an inevitable fire throughout the story.
This deeply emotional story has many layers. Although the previous three bunkhouse stories were a whirlwind, this one felt almost the most mellow, which fits as the series closes. The maturity and growth are clear among all the characters, and Lainey shows this well through Heston and Hattie. They had their wild beginnings, and a wildness brings them back together, but it fits like the final puzzle piece. This is the bunkhouse family, and it wouldn’t make sense any other way.
I am even getting emotional as I come to the end of this review, because what do you mean it’s over? But I am so grateful because it just means I can go back and experience it all again when I want. There’s such comfort between the pages of Lainey’s books, and I can’t wait to read anything else she writes in the future.
Without spoiling Heston and Hattie’s journey, I’ll end here. If you enjoy second chances, found family, age gaps, groveling, or "it’s always been you" vibes, this is for you. Even if not, read it anyway! The emotion and heart in this story had me clutching my chest and letting loose some tears. I am rating Down in Flames 9 out of 10 stars and 2 out of 5 for spice. It’s a beautiful conclusion; I’m sad to see it end.
