Sarah Dessen at The Strand: Nostalgia, Writing, & “Change of Plans”

Me and Sarah Dessen at The Strand Bookstore in NYC

Had the pleasure of meeting the incredible bestselling YA author Sarah Dessen at The Strand in NYC with my bestie Age @wordsnwhiskers on Instagram. We had the opportunity to listen to her and Tamara Fuentes discuss her newest release, Change of Plans, learn about her planning process and character development, and hear a few anecdotes about her life.

This was such a beautiful conversation to listen to. Really brought some nostalgia for years past, summers from when we were kids, reads from middle and high school, friendships, and family memories. But it also reminded me how much life changes when you grow up, and why stepping back to YA, especially Sarah Dessen’s YA, is a nice way to catch your breath.

As a writer, it’s always a great experience hearing how authors work, especially when they are undoubtedly honest about how hard it is. It was so reassuring to hear, and it made me feel even more inspired that, no matter how long it takes me, it is possible to achieve the outcome I am working toward. Thank you, Sarah, for that; it was invaluable to hear.

Did you grow up reading Sarah Dessen too? I’d love to hear which of her books stayed with you most!
