Book Review: Book Lovers by Emily Henry

Welcome to the beginning of my Emily Henry journey. I have had a copy of Book Lovers on my shelf for at least a year now, and I kept putting it off. Why? I'm not sure. But man, I wish I hadn't. This book was perfect on so many levels! I'm amazed at how much I relate to Nora. Perhaps it's being a publishing girly in the tri-state area, or maybe it's feeling the need to take care of everything and everyone in a "mom"-like role. Still, my heart swelled while reading about Nora and her life as a literary agent. And Charlie.
Charlie, Charlie, Charlie. Everyone wants someone with the wit and charm to go toe-to-toe with. The banter between these two had me so unbelievably giddy. I couldn't keep my jaw off the floor, my cheeks from turning rosy, or the butterflies from fluttering in my tummy. Sex appeal central was this gravelly, smart-mouthed editor with a silent heart of gold.
The connection between Nora and Charlie was clear from the start. They had an automatic chemistry fueled by "distaste" that made the burn of this book so entertaining. With raised brows, twitchy chins, and smouting (iykyk), their body language told such a different story to the words coming out of their mouths. It had me chasing each line, devouring to read what was next.
Although predictable, due to the nature of this book, and Nora's constant mocking of the small-town romances she reads with her sister, it was somehow more perfect that the outcome was exactly what I expected. It solidified the relatability to the characters and the insight of being a book lover.
Something I especially enjoyed from this story was Nora's relationship with her sister, Libby. The love these two have for each other is so palpable and reminds me of the relationship I have with my sister. Albeit slightly rocky at times, Nora and Libby are so in tune with each other and know to their core how the other will react to certain events, statements, etc. It is a true testament to a sisterhood when you get deeper into the story and see the change between them and how growing up may create distance or secrecy for a moment, but then comes a revelation that ricochets to bond the two even further.
I loved that this story was not only a rom-com but a tale of two sisters and a journey through self-discovery and healing. There were so many elements that made this book well-rounded, and I don't know what else to say other than that I loved it.
I enjoyed Emily's writing style, the complexity of the characters, and the relatable moments so much that I'm eager to read the other books she's written. I am rating Book Lovers 10 out of 10 stars with a 2 out of 5 for spice.
If you've read something by Emily Henry before, what book do you recommend I read next?
As always, thanks for reading! 💜
